The Muses of Montparnasse

The beginning of the 20th century was marked not only with the political revolutions but with the different social upheavels as well. The female dwellers of Paris, the city which has been always known for its spirit of freedom, were first to deviate from the course of classical female concept, where women are only the muses but not the creators themselves.
Sonia Delaunay, Tamara de Lempicka, Marie Vassilieff, Vera Rockline - are the artists whose paintings nowadays are equally significant as the paintings of their contemporary male artist
The exhibition The Muses of Montparnasse presented by the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts comprises the works of the women who dared to raise their voices on the art scene of the 20th century. More than 200 of paintings and sculptures were assembled from the private collections and museums.
